Purpose

To provide middle managers with the appropriate tools and skills to achieve improved results in their own organisation through effective unit management and strategy implementation.

     This programme is unique in that it:

* Utilises and requires application of the participants own organisational strategy
* Facilitates learning-by-doing through hands-on application of the tools in the participant's own workplace
* Addresses the challenges particular to middle management
* Covers the full range of management disciplines

* Provides a recognised management qualification - at a tertiary level

 

Learning outcomes

Participants will learn a practical framework for effectively managing their business unit in a way that balances their day-to-day responsibilities with achieving their organisation's strategic objectives.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to manage a business unit in line with the strategic objectives of their organisation on an ongoing basis
  • Evaluate and implement changes that will improve the performance of their unit through appropriate application of relevant middle management tools and techniques
  • Manage their team more effectively
  • Understand the financial implications of their decisions
  • Contribute more to the success of their organisation

Upon completion of this course, participants will have:

  • Clarified their unit's strategic role and responsibilities within their organisation
  • Completed an audit of their unit's current performance
  • Identified areas of improvement within their unit, and
  • Implemented measurable improvements to the day-to-day operating of their unit

Part 1: Concepts and Models

  • Management Learning - how to learn and improve as a manager
  • Role of the business unit (middle) manager - unique challenges and benefits
  • Understanding your organisation - key tools used
  • The bigger picture - stakeholders and environment
  • Dividing up the organisation - key issues and choices, plus how to be an effective part of a bigger whole
  • Business Unit Definition - identifying what your unit has to deliver
  • Effective Business Unit Management Model
  • Business Unit Management Role - what is required of you as a manager
  • Business Unit Organisational elements to be effective
  • Establishing and using performance measures that drive improved performance
  • Other additional Feedback mechanisms
  • Essential Business Audit Tools
  • Assignment One and role on Mentor

Practical Work:  Workplace Audit of Business Unit to identify objectives, resources, performance to date and opportunities for improvement.

Part 2: Business as Usual

  • Review of Assignment One in context of tools presented in Part One
  • Financial concepts in business – Profitability, cashflow, ROI and Equity
  • Strategic alignment and management tools for day to day operations
  • Top-down planning method, including top down flowcharting
  • Effective Personal/Time Management tools and strategies – assessing where the work comes from and how best to manage it
  • People management – how to increase engagement and productivity of your team
  • Business Systems (how) – tools, elements of effective systems, aligning systems with strategy, step by step systemising method
  • Business Systems (what)– what to systemise, priorities, improving, documenting and review
  • Working effectively with others (peers & other units)
  • Assignment Two

Practical Work: Draft workplace improvements to financial performance, planning and people management based on issues identified in the audit and approved by company mentor.

Part 3: Business Development

 Review of Assignment Two in context of tools presented in Part Two
  • Business development planning model for day to day operations
  • Process improvement tools and techniques
  • Improving business unit communication
  • Critical thinking skills and analysis tools
  • Effective decision-making
  • Working together – team development
  • Future trends in business environment and methodologies
  • Change management vs. change preparation – how to get results
  • Achieving organisational consistency and synergy

  • Assignment Three & Mentors Questionnaire

 

Practical Work: Draft workplace improvements to ongoing business development, communication, business processes and decision-making based on issues identified in the audit and approved by company mentor.

 

Mentor Assessment – Mentor’s review of achievements of course, participant and participant’s workplace improvements.

Important Note: Learners on this course will require the support of a mentor who is capable of assessing the practical validity of audits and business plans created by learners as a result of their practical work.
