Where to start...

How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time.

Managing a successful business is the same - you can only do things one bit (or bite!) at a time.

It can be daunting knowing where to start, so what is the first thing you need to do?

Below are the five key steps to successfully developing your business.

You can only eat an elephant one
bite at a time!  Just like you can only develop your business one step at a time.

Step 1 - Understand your business model

Your business is a value creation entity.

Therefore before you begin to develop any part of it you need to understand where, and how, you create value.  Value for:

  • your customers
  • your employees,
  • and yourself/owners.

Once you understand your business model, you are then able to take the next step in developing your business.

1. Your business is a value creating entity - you need to understand your business model to know where you create value.

Step 2 - Decide your desired results/goals

Now that you understand where value is created in your business, you can identify realistic results you want your business to achieve.

2. You need clear goals.

Step 3 - Clarify your strategy

Your next challenge is to identify the best strategy to achieve your desired results.

An effective business strategy will:

  • Define, in general, how your business is going to achieve its goals (desired results)
  • Maximise the $ potential of your business (from a comprehensive understanding of your business model)
  • Articulate the main points of difference from your competitors
  • Unite and focus the efforts of your team
  • Provide clear parameters for decision-making
  • Facilitate increased profitability, growth and longevity

3. An effective strategy will be a strong foundation for ongoing success.

Step 4 - Understand your current reality

Take a comprehensive, objective look at what is really happening in your business.

Identify the strengths you want to protect and the weaknesses you need to address.

4. The first step has to be taken from where you are right now.

Step 5 - Identify digestible steps to close the gap

Choose the most suitable part to work on first.

This may not necessarily be the most critical area.  Sometimes it is important to attack the 'low hanging fruit' to get some runs on the board.  That way you learn some business development skills on an area that is not too difficult, but reaps quick rewards.  Sometimes your first area is a key area that seems to underpin so many other areas.

Take your time to assess the situation to identify the best place to start.  Keep your developments manageable, so you gain momentum by achieving sustainable change.

5. Real and lasting change occurs from taking steps one at a time and ensuring new habits are firmly embedded into your business as usual.
