Why use a management consultant?
Could you imagine going to a dentist who had no training? A dentist who did not use the best tools?
How effective would they be? What would the experience be like? And the end result?
Don't they make horror movies about this sort of thing?
The business horror story...
This dentist scenario sounds awful, but is management really any different?
Unfortunately there are many organisations and employees who suffer all sorts of horrors at the hands of unskilled managers.
It is largely accepted that dentistry is a profession that requires extensive training and the best tools.
In our opinion organisational management is a profession that requires technical expertise and tools, the same as dentistry. Management is a recognised field of expertise with proven techniques and tools.
A natural progression?
In practice however, we see many managers operating in organisations without the appropriate techniques, skills or tools.
This is often not their fault.
Many managers are promoted as a result of their technical expertise and it is assumed they will demonstrate the same level of expertise in the management area as they did in their technical field. Quite a leap in logic, but a common assumption. The new manager is then left in the difficult, and often new, situation of doubting their ability.
Business owners often find themselves at the head of an organisation that is growing rapidly and in great need of management organisation. It is ironic that at a time when their business needs to establish its management systems, many business owners are actually new to management.
