Raise your hand if you know of any company that has implemented its strategic plan perfectly. Not many hands up. Why? Because you operate in a complex, dynamic environment where it is impossible to predict every step necessary to achieve your goals.  This is one of the reasons why we do not like strategic plans.  They are compiled by the few, understood by even less and often end up collecting dust in the bottom of someone's drawer.  The word 'plan' is a noun, a thing and often a thing that quickly becomes irrelevant. So, what is the alternative? Strategic Planning.

Detailed strategic plans quickly become obsolete.  Therefore it is essential to have an effective strategic planning system that provides clarity and direction while being able to handle the complex, dynamic environment in which you operate.

'Planning' is a verb, something that you do.  Strategic planning is an ongoing activity.  You need to ensure you have a clear big picture plan, and that you engage in detailed planning as you go. 

Strategic Planning is not something that is ever finished.  Therefore it is essential to have an effective Strategic Planning system that ensures you have the necessary clarity of direction as well as the mechanisms to analyse and adjust as necessary.
