The 3 biggest systemising mistakes to avoid

Implementing effective systems can be hard work, so it pays to avoid the common mistakes.

Mistake 1

Tackling too much at once.   Systemising your business is like eating an elephant - you can only do it one bite at a time.  So bite off a small mouthful and do it well.  As systems are about influencing behaviour, make sure your system improvement is really integrated into the business's habits before moving on to the next improvement.

Mistake 2

Forcing something that does not fit your business.  Sometime what looks like a great idea in someone else's business is not necessarily suitable for your business.  Again systems are there to influence the behaviour of your people, so you have to modify things to suit the style, skills, resources and culture of your business.

Mistake 3

Overcomplicating things.  We often see people start their systemising by writing long, detailed procedures.  Ugh!  What a great way to lose enthusiasm fast.  Try our top-down approach instead.  Use more general tools first, like flowcharts and checklists, and only move into procedures where detail is necessary.  Review the 5 ways to get work done to assess whether you really need to go into so much detail.
