What to systemise?
A key function of systemising is coordinating.
For example many people contribute to the end product/service a particular customer receives. From who designed the message that caught the customer's attention, to who answered their query, who produced what they needed, who delivered it, who charged for it, and who phoned to chase up the invoice!
Therefore you need to systemise everything unless only one person is involved in that area and they have all the necessary skills and knowledge to do it.

As your business gets bigger, the complexity increases and the interdependency between roles increases.

Layers of systemising
Before you get into a panic about how big that sounds, consider that there are many layers to systemising.
You may systemise the interactions between different parts of the business so people understand where they have to pick up the baton and when they pass it on (and who to!) A simple flowchart and a weekly plan/review meeting may be all you need.
If however individuals have to do things in a specific way or else it impacts on others in the system, then you may need to be more specific, utilising process guidelines and specifications.
